How we get our clean water

Ever wondered how we get our clean water?
It starts out with a river. That river has a giant sieve that takes out branches bugs and leaves.
Then coagulant is added this sticks to dirt and makes it heavy, causing it to sink to the bottom.
Next the membrane removes germs from the water.
After that the water goes to the carbon tank.
The carbon tank extracts all the pesticides and organic compounds like tastes and smells.
Finally it goes on to the chlorine tank which kills any remaining viruses and bacteria from the water.
Then it all gets sent away for us to use.
And thats how we get our clean water.

Water filtration process

The water filtration process starts like this.
Firstly the water goes through a giant sieve to remove all the litter.
Then coagulant is added to the water which makes all the dirt sink.
Afterwards the water goes through a membrane filter. This removes germs like giardia. The membrane looks like a piece of string.
After that the water goes through a carbon tank which gets rid of tastes and smells in the water.
Finally the water goes through a chlorine tank which kills the remaining germs
the membrane left behind.
Remember that if your not sure the water is clean you MUST boil it.
This is the water filtration process.

Airborne

the sun heats me up.
I feel myself rising off my leaf
stretching
until airborne
my weight falls away
higher
the air is as chilly as an ice cube
my weight returns
I'm myself again

Fluffy Cloud

Fluffy cloud
floating in the sky.
As light as can be
like a drifting cotton ball
Holding hands with my
friendly fluffy friends.
We make pictures...
fish, cats, and more

Plop, plop, plop

Plop, plop, plop
my friends and I separate
some in lakes
some in rives
some in oceans.
When I fall from above
plop, plop, plop
it starts to rain.

Watercare Information Report

How do Watercare clean our water?
Firstly a giant sieve in the rives takes all of the large items out, like branches, birds, leaves and bugs.
Secondly they put  Alum in the water so that all the little bits sticks together and fall to the bottom.
Thirdly the water goes through a membrane. It is very strong and it looks like string. This takes out germs and lets only water in through very small holes.
Fourth it goes through a carbon filter that takes out bad smells and tastes.
Lastly it goes through the Chlorine tank. They use chlorine gas bubbles, this uses 30 to 40% less chlorine.
This is how Watercare cleans our water.

Painting

Today Room 7 and 8 did some painting. We could paint anything we wanted to do with water or space. Some of the pictures were crazy colours. Written by Janelle.

Tuesday 17 May 2011

On Thursday Sally from Watercare came to visit our class. She taught us how water is made clean enough to drink. We got to experiment with different methods of filtering, including cotton wool, bark, paper towels and sand. Then we made our own filters. Those people with the best filter and the cleanest water won two chocolate fish!
